LAPLAND

There is nowhere on earth quite like Lapland in winter.

The Arctic Circle delivers on every promise. Reindeer moving through snow-covered forest. Dog sleds cutting trails through absolute silence. Children meeting Santa in the place he actually lives. And on the right night, the aurora borealis crossing the sky in colours that make every photograph feel inadequate.

People come to Lapland for magic. They stay cold because they underestimated what the Arctic actually feels like. The two do not have to go together.

ARRIVE PREPARED

LAYERING	Extreme-cold layering is essential here, this isn't standard ski-resort dressing.
BASE	Merino thermals (top and bottom).
MID LAYERS	Insulated down or wool layers, ideally two mid-layers for core warmth.
OUTERWEAR	A serious Arctic-grade parka rated for sub -20°C, windproof and heavily insulated. Extremities matter most, thermal-lined boots rated for extreme cold, mittens (warmer than gloves), and a face covering/balaclava for windchill. Spring (March) allows slightly lighter layering, but nights stay bitterly cold year-round, so the layering system doesn't change much, just the intensity.

APRÈS

Lapland's apres isn't about the bar scene, it's fireside and low-key. Think glass igloos, wood-fired saunas, and hot toddies while watching for the aurora.

The vibe is cosy and reflective rather than social: think chunky knits, faux fur, insulated boots, and thermals designed to be lived in, not just seen in.

CLIMATE	-15 to -5°C in peak winter, dropping to -25°C or colder overnight in December/January.
PEAK SEASON	Late November to early April. Aurora viewing best Dec–March; more daylight from Feb onwards.
SNOW & TERRAIN	Reliable deep powder all season, flat-to-rolling terrain rather than steep alpine, better suited to snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and husky/reindeer sledding than piste skiing.
